Gameplay

Past Cure is an action indie game played from a third-person perspective. The player controls Ian, a former elite soldier who seeks the truth about military experiments that gave him special powers, including the ability to slow time and astral projection. Assisted by his brother, Ian tries to master these abilities while navigating the criminal underworld. Each use of his powers further detaches his mind from reality.

Development

Simon Gerdesmann, managing director of Phantom 8, said the idea came from a friend's pitch. Development began in March 2016 with three developers, later expanding to six, then eight. The studio's name Phantom 8 reflects the final team size. The international team included people from Turkey, Belgium, Egypt, Romania, England and North Macedonia. The game was built in Unreal Engine 4, with inspirations from Silent Hill and Metal Gear Solid.

Reception

Metacritic calculated an average score of 37 out of 100 based on 22 reviews, indicating generally unfavorable reviews. John Cal McCormick of Push Square said the game is bad but noted it is the best kind of bad game, as the finished product does not come together despite effort and ideas. Makedonski of Destructoid wrote that the game is flawed to its core, with a mangled story and shoddy design preventing any aspect from standing out. Jon Denton of Trusted Reviews remarked that the game's lower budget than most action games was refreshing because the team did not use crowdfunding. Chandler Wood of PlayStation LifeStyle criticized the voice actors as uninterested, stating that Google Assistant's voice would have done a better job reading the lines.
