Flowering plants, or angiosperms, are defined by their production of flowers and fruits, with seeds enclosed within a fruit. This group, formerly called Magnoliophyta, is the most diverse lineage of land plants, encompassing 64 orders, 416 families, roughly 13,000 genera, and an estimated 300,000 species. They include herbaceous forbs, grasses, most broad-leaved trees, shrubs, vines, and many aquatic plants. Angiosperms are distinguished from gymnosperms by several key features: they bear flowers, their xylem contains vessel elements rather than tracheids, they produce endosperm within seeds, and their fruits fully envelop the seeds. The ancestors of flowering plants diverged from the common ancestor of all living gymnosperms over 300 million years ago, before the end of the Carboniferous. During the Cretaceous period, they underwent a rapid diversification, becoming the dominant plant group worldwide.
Ecologically, angiosperms are cosmopolitan, thriving in terrestrial, freshwater, and marine environments. They dominate nearly every land habitat except frigid tundra and coniferous forests. Seagrasses in the Alismatales grow in marine coastal waters. Some species are adapted to extreme conditions: carnivorous sundews flourish in nutrient-poor acid bogs, while spring gentians thrive on alkaline chalk and limestone. Growth habits range from small, short-lived herbaceous annuals and biennials to long-lived perennial trees reaching nearly 100 meters in height, such as eucalypts and dipterocarps. Some species climb as vines or lianas. About 99% of flowering plants are photosynthetic autotrophs; the remainder are parasitic, either on fungi (myco-heterotrophic) or on other plants, wholly or partially. The vast majority of species belong to the eudicot (75%), monocot (23%), and magnoliid (2%) clades, with the remaining five clades containing fewer than 250 species. The botanical term "angiosperm" was coined in 1690 by Paul Hermann for plants with seeds in capsules, but its modern meaning—all flowering plants—was established by the mid-19th century following work by Robert Brown and Wilhelm Hofmeister. The Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG) has reclassified angiosperms since 1998, treating them as an unranked clade.
