Baker was born on June 15, 1949, in Riverside, California. He earned the nickname 'Dusty' from his mother. He was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 1967 and made his MLB debut in 1968. He played 19 seasons, most notably with the Dodgers, where he was a two-time All-Star, won two Silver Slugger Awards and a Gold Glove Award, and became the first NLCS MVP in 1977. He was a member of the 1981 World Series champion Dodgers. As a manager, he won the 2022 World Series with the Astros and was named NL Manager of the Year three times with the Giants. He ranks seventh in MLB managerial wins and has the most wins among African-American managers.
