Penguin Pete
First mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins, a Humboldt penguin.
Penguin Pete was the first mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins, an Ecuadorian-born Humboldt penguin on loan from the Pittsburgh Zoo. Special ice skates were made for him by CCM in Canada, and a University of Pittsburgh skater taught him to skate. He debuted during the second intermission of a game against the Philadelphia Flyers on February 21, 1968, and made seven appearances total, the last on November 16, 1968, before dying of pneumonia the following week.
