Marvin Minsky was an American mathematician and a central figure in artificial intelligence research.[1] On January 24, 2016, at age 88, Minsky passed away in Boston, Massachusetts due to a cerebral hemorrhage.[2]

Life and work

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1945 before earning a mathematics degree from Harvard and a Ph.D. from Princeton.[3] He co-founded what is now the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory with John McCarthy.[4] He also invented the confocal microscope in 1957 and the first head-mounted graphical display in 1963.[5] Following a three-year period as a Junior Fellow with the Harvard Society of Fellows, Minsky became a member of the MIT faculty in 1958 and stayed at that institution for the remainder of his professional life.[6]

The SNARC machine, constructed by Minsky in 1951, is frequently regarded as the earliest artificial neural network.[5]

What the cited sources add

A VICE article reports that Minsky proposed his "ultimate machine" design while at Bell Labs in 1952.[7] A tribute on space.com notes that Minsky built the first learning machine based on neural networks.[8] The same source states that Minsky mentored a generation of AI leaders, including Ray Kurzweil.[8] The Japan Prize citation explains that Minsky's 1961 paper "Steps Toward Artificial Intelligence" brought knowledge about AI to many researchers worldwide.[9]

The Guardian obituary adds that Minsky helped Stanley Kubrick with the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey.[10] After the switch was flipped to the "ON" position, a hand came out of the box and moved the switch back to "OFF".[7]
