History
Minor league baseball in Petersburg dates back to 1885, when the city first joined the Virginia League, competing in both 1885 and 1886. The Petersburg Farmers returned to a six-team Virginia League in 1894 and claimed the championship with a 72–44 record, as no playoffs were held. On June 15 of that year, Brownie Foreman no-hit the Staunton Mountaineers in a 9–1 win. After a 55–69 finish in 1895, the Farmers opened 1896 at 32–60 before relocating to Hampton on August 13, becoming the Hampton-Newport News Clamdiggers. The Virginia League disbanded after 1896. It reformed in 1900, but the Farmers folded on June 11 with an 8–26 record. The Petersburg Goobers entered the league in 1910 after the Portsmouth Truckers moved to town on July 5, finishing sixth at 43–68. The Goobers won the 1911 championship with a 68–51 mark, placed second in 1912 at 79–54, and took the 1913 title with an 89–46 record. On August 1, 1913, Harry Hedgpeth no-hit the Roanoke Tigers in a 4–0 victory. The Goobers ended fifth in 1914 and sixth in 1915.
The ballparks
Until 1900, Petersburg teams played at the Petersburg Ballfield, located at the corner of West Washington and West Street. From 1910 to 1913, home games were at Parkinson Park on Canal Street near the Appomattox River. In 1951 and 1954, the Colonial Heights-Petersburg team played at Shepherd Park, now the Shepherd Stadium Baseball Complex at 901 Meridian Avenue in Colonial Heights.
