Playing career
Tony Amonte entered the NHL after being selected 68th overall by the New York Rangers in the 1988 draft. He first hit the ice in the 1991 playoffs and turned heads as a rookie, notching more than 30 goals and finishing third in Calder Memorial Trophy voting. Over three seasons with the Rangers, he totaled 84 goals before being dealt to the Chicago Blackhawks with just seven games left in the 1993–94 campaign—the same year New York went on to win the Stanley Cup. In Chicago, Amonte became a star, reuniting with former Thayer Academy teammate Jeremy Roenick. He hit the 30-goal mark six times and surpassed 40 goals three times, while also playing five straight seasons without missing a single game. On the international stage, Amonte helped Team USA capture gold at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey, scoring the game-winner against Canada with two and a half minutes remaining in the final. He started the 2002–03 season with the Phoenix Coyotes and was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers late that year. On August 2, 2005, he signed with the Calgary Flames as a free agent, and on December 10, 2005, he scored his 400th NHL goal against the Ottawa Senators. As of March 2020, Amonte ranked 13th all-time in points among American-born players with 900. He announced his retirement in 2008 via his personal website. On January 21, 2009, the Blackhawks held "Tony Amonte Heritage Night" at the United Center, giving the first 10,000 fans commemorative pins.

After signing with the Phoenix Coyotes as a free agent in July 2002, he was dealt to the Philadelphia Flyers the following March for Guillaume Lefebvre, a 2003 third-round pick from Atlanta, and a 2004 second-round pick originally belonging to Phoenix. His final move came in August 2005, when he signed with the Calgary Flames as a free agent.
