Inductivism
Philosophy that theories derive from neutral observation and induction.
Inductivism is a long-standing philosophy of science, still common today, that describes how scientific theories are built. It holds that a scientist should observe a subject without bias, use inductive reasoning to derive general laws from specific cases, and thereby uncover the one true theory that nature itself dictates. At its core, inductivism rests on the premise that facts alone can give rise to, or confirm, theories.
Francis Bacon first laid out this approach in 1620 in his work *Novum Organum*, as a direct challenge to the scholastic tradition that had dominated before modern science. That earlier model relied on deductive reasoning from authoritative sources, such as religious texts. For four centuries, inductivism evolved through several phases and held sway over scientific thought.
By the 19th and 20th centuries, inductivism gave way to hypothetico-deductivism—sometimes called deductivism—as a more realistic ideal of how science actually works. Today, scientific theories are widely seen as products of inference to the best explanation (IBE), a process that, like real scientific practice, is varied and cannot be pinned down to a single formal method.

**Inductivist Endorsement**
Francis Bacon is often unfairly caricatured as a naive inductivist. The so-called Baconian model, in its simplest form, advises observing nature, proposing a modest law that sums up a pattern, confirming it with many observations, then proposing a slightly broader law and confirming that with even more observations, while discarding any law that fails. These laws grow ever broader but never outstrip the observations. Freed from preconceptions, scientists gradually reveal nature’s causal and material structure. Newton’s theory of universal gravitation, which treats motion as the effect of a force, was seen as inductivism’s greatest success.
Around 1740, David Hume in Scotland pointed out several problems with inferring causality from experience. He noted that enumerative induction—generalizing from particular instances to a universal law—is logically invalid, because humans only observe sequences of sensory events, not cause and effect. Since we perceive neither logical nor natural necessity or impossibility between events, we tacitly assume the uniformity of nature, an assumption that itself remains unproven. Later philosophers would label and emphasize these points as Hume’s fork, the problem of induction, and Hume’s law, though Hume himself accepted empirical sciences as inevitably inductive.
Alarmed by what he saw as Hume’s radical empiricism, Immanuel Kant in Germany identified its apparent opposite in Descartes’ rationalism and sought a middle ground. Kant argued that necessity does exist, bridging the world in itself to human experience, and that it comes from the mind, which has innate constants that determine space, time, and substance. These constants ensure that the correct physical theory is universally true. This view shielded Newtonian physics but at the cost of scientific realism: science, for Kant, could only trace appearances (phenomena) and never reveal external reality (noumena). Kant’s transcendental idealism launched German idealism, a school of speculative metaphysics.
While many philosophers continued to awkwardly trust that empirical sciences were inductive, John Stuart Mill in England proposed five methods for discerning causality, arguing that genuine inductivism goes beyond mere enumerative induction. In the 1830s, Auguste Comte in France, opposing metaphysics, laid out positivism. Unlike Bacon’s model, positivism emphasizes making predictions, confirming them, and establishing scientific laws that cannot be refuted by theology or metaphysics. Mill, who believed experience confirms the uniformity of nature and thus justifies enumerative induction, endorsed positivism—the first modern philosophy of science, which also served as a political philosophy holding that scientific knowledge is the only genuine knowledge.
**Inductivist Repudiation**
Around 1840, William Whewell in England argued that the inductive sciences are not so simple. He insisted on recognizing “superinduction”—an explanatory scope or principle invented by the mind to unite facts, not something found in the facts themselves. John Stuart Mill rejected Whewell’s hypothetico-deductivism as the method of science. Whewell believed that, given the evidence—including unlikely signs like consilience—such theories could be probably true in a metaphysical sense. By 1880, C. S. Peirce in America clarified the basis of deductive inference and, while acknowledging induction, proposed a third type of inference he called “abduction,” now known as inference to the best explanation (IBE).
The logical positivists emerged in the 1920s, rejecting metaphysical philosophies and accepting that theories originate through hypothetico-deductive reasoning. They sought to objectively evaluate scientific theories—or any statement beyond the emotive—as probably false or true only with respect to empirical facts and logical relations, a campaign called verificationism. In a milder version, Rudolf Carnap tried but always failed to develop an inductive logic that could quantify a universal law’s truth based on observational evidence, calling it “degree of confirmation.” Karl Popper, advocating a strong hypothetico-deductivism called falsificationism from the 1930s onward, attacked inductivism and its positivist variants. In 1963, he called enumerative induction “a myth,” arguing it is actually a deductive inference from a tacit explanatory theory. In 1965, Gilbert Harman explained enumerative induction as a disguised form of IBE.
Thomas Kuhn’s 1962 book became a cultural landmark. It explains that periods of normal science operate within paradigms, each of which is overturned by revolutionary science, whose radical paradigm then becomes the new normal science. Kuhn’s thesis broke the hold of logical positivism on Western academia, and inductivism fell. Beyond Popper and Kuhn, other postpositivist philosophers of science—including Paul Feyerabend, Imre Lakatos, and Larry Laudan—have all but unanimously rejected inductivism.
