Nikolai Fyodorov (philosopher)

Russian philosopher who dreamed of scientific resurrection and the Common Task of humanity.

Last updated

Russian cosmism, a movement he founded, is considered an early form of transhumanism.[1] Using scientific approaches, he promoted extending life dramatically, achieving physical immortality, and reviving the deceased.[2]

Life and work

He had an older brother, Alexander, and three sisters.[3] In 1849 he entered the Lyceum Richelieu in Odessa but left after two years due to his uncle's death.[4] Fyodorov was a devout member of the Russian Orthodox Christian Church but was never a clergyman.[5] He was celibate.[6]

Fyodorov was born to a nobleman and a serf, but his parents were not married.[7] Pneumonia took his life during the winter of 1903 while he resided in a poorhouse.[8] The Soviet Union demolished his grave along with every other burial site in that monastery in 1930.[9]

What the cited sources add

According to Tsiolkovsky, Fyodorov took the place of his university instructors.[10] Tsiolkovsky depicted Fyodorov as an attractive, medium-height brunet who was bald and dressed decently.[7] Despite having every chance to publish, Fyodorov’s humility kept him from releasing his writings.[7] Fyodorov responded by saying, "I have seen many fools, but I have never seen such a thing."[7]
