Early life
Ratcliffe was born in London, Ontario, to Elaine and Al Ratcliffe. He grew up in a basketball family but followed his older brother Landon into ice hockey, learning to skate at three and playing organized games by age five. A childhood friend of future NHL player Nick Suzuki, Ratcliffe originally played defence before being converted to a power forward at 11. He played minor hockey with the London Jr. Knights, recording 49 points in 32 games in his final season with them.
Playing career
The Guelph Storm selected Ratcliffe 15th overall in the 2015 OHL Priority Selection. He scored his first junior goal on October 3, 2015, against Saginaw Spirit goaltender Evan Cormier, finishing his rookie season with five goals and eight assists in 46 games. After an offensive surge in 2016–17, he was named to the 2017 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game and finished with 56 points and a team-leading 28 goals, earning the Storm's Most Improved Player award. The Philadelphia Flyers drafted him 35th overall in June 2017, and he signed an entry-level contract that August. Returning to Guelph for 2017–18, he struggled early but finished with a career-high 41 goals and 68 points, receiving the Glad Mowatt Most Valuable Player Award, Fay Scott Memorial Award, and Top Scorer Award at the team banquet. He then joined the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the AHL, scoring his first professional goal on April 13, 2018, in a 5–2 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
