Charles Richard Flowers, better known as Dickie Flowers, was a shortstop who played in the National Association for the 1871 Troy Haymakers and the 1872 Philadelphia Athletics. Born in 1850 in Philadelphia, he started his professional career in 1869 as the everyday shortstop for the Keystone club. At just 21 years old, his major league run ended after only three games with the reigning champion Athletics in 1872. He died in his native Philadelphia on October 6, 1892, at age 42.

Background

Flowers first made a name for himself in 1867 as a 17-year-old playing for the Quaker City club of Philadelphia in the nominally amateur National Association of Base Ball Players. That season, he scored 112 runs in 27 games—more than four per game—tying with three other players for the team's second-best rate behind first catcher Fergy Malone. The next year, he moved to the Keystones and led the team in games and runs. When the NABBP allowed openly professional teams in 1869, the Keystones were one of twelve teams in the pro pennant race.

Flowers played every known game and was one of three players who scored more than three runs per game. He also pitched and caught occasionally. The Keystones lost all five matches against the Athletics and won only 3 of 20 professional games. In 1870, Flowers joined the Haymakers of Troy, New York, a pro team of average strength, and played all 46 known games.
