Background

Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson both grew up in athletic families; their fathers Dell Curry and Mychal Thompson had productive NBA careers, and their mothers Sonya Curry and Julie Thompson played college volleyball. Neither Curry nor Thompson was highly recruited by college programs. Curry received no major scholarship offers and attended Davidson College, a mid-major school, where he led the Wildcats near the Final Four in the 2008 NCAA Tournament and became a consensus first-team All-American. Thompson played at Washington State University, lightly recruited by other Pacific-10 schools, and became a two-time first-team All-Pac-10 selection, leading the conference in scoring as a senior.

Golden State Warriors

Curry was selected seventh overall by Golden State in the 2009 NBA draft, and Thompson was chosen eleventh overall in 2011. In 2012–13, Curry and Thompson combined for 483 three-pointers, the most ever by an NBA duo, with Curry setting a single-season record of 272. The following season they became the first teammates to finish first and second in three-pointers, extending their combined record to 484. Both were members of the 2014 U.S. national team that won gold at the FIBA World Cup, where they combined for 43 of Team USA's 77 three-pointers. Thompson emerged as Curry's peer during that tournament, averaging 12.7 points to Curry's 10.7.

Nickname

The Splash Brothers nickname originated from a tweet by Warriors website writer Brian Witt on December 21, 2012, during a game against the Charlotte Bobcats. Curry and Thompson had combined for 25 points and seven three-pointers by halftime, and Witt used the hashtag #SplashBrothers. The term is a play on the Bash Brothers nickname of Oakland Athletics baseball players Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire. The Warriors organization liked the nickname and encouraged its continued use.

Records

The duo holds the record for most career three-pointers made by a duo (6,228), most in NBA playoffs (1,119), and most in NBA Finals (258). They set the single-season record for combined three-pointers with 678, breaking their own mark of 525, and attempted 1,568 three-pointers in a season. In a single playoff season they made 178 three-pointers. They share records for most consecutive playoff games with at least six three-pointers (3) and most consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers (7). They are the only duo to make at least 250 three-pointers in a season (four seasons), at least 300 (one season), at least 500 combined in a season (six seasons), and at least 600 combined (two seasons). They are also the only duo to make at least 400 combined three-pointers in seven consecutive seasons and at least 500 combined in three consecutive seasons.
