Yu Narukami
The silent transfer student who awakened Izanagi to lead the Investigation Team through the TV World.
Yu Narukami is the main protagonist of the 2008 role-playing video game Persona 4, developed by Atlus. Originally a silent character whose thoughts and actions are decided by the player, he moves from his city home to the countryside region Inaba to live with his uncle Ryotaro Dojima and cousin Nanako while his parents work abroad. Shortly after arriving, Yu investigates a murder case involving victims killed in the mysterious TV World. Here, he awakens his Persona, Izanagi, a physical manifestation of his subconscious spirit, to confront and defeat Shadows. While silent in the game, Yu received specific characterization and development in adaptations like the 2011 anime Persona 4: The Animation and various spin-off games.

Lore & Background
Yu Narukami was designed by Shigenori Soejima to be an ambiguous character, allowing players to project their own feelings onto him. Unlike the shy and cute protagonist of Persona 3, Yu features a smaller hair design and "cool" eyes hidden under his fringe, inspired by an unspecified Osamu Tezuka character wearing glasses. His school uniform collar stands taller than others to distinguish him. Soejima aimed for a "well-rounded" but standout look, sketching a "baby face" to find his special quality. Yu's base Persona, Izanagi, is based on Japanese myths and designed to convey a "manly" feeling with a giant knife rather than a pike. Izanagi-no-Okami is a separate Persona obtained via fusion or in the true ending, not a direct evolution of Izanagi. Additionally, Magatsu no Izanagi is Adachi's Persona, not a corrupted version of Yu's.
Reader's Guide
Players control Yu as a silent protagonist whose few lines relate to the plot or provide witty comedy. His design avoids a "dorky" look despite wearing glasses in the TV World, influenced by his status as the marketing core where fights force characters into eyewear. In adaptations, he is voiced by Daisuke Namikawa in Japanese and Johnny Yong Bosch in English; Bosch lowered his register to differentiate Yu from Tohru Adachi, whom he also voiced. Prior to the anime naming him "Yu Narukami," he was known as Sōji Seta in the manga or simply the "Protagonist" in the game. Hashino noted that Yu's silence allows players to interpret emotional reactions subjectively, while Kishi used his composed nature in battle to show emotional strength without weapons. Critics praised his characterization and social life, noting the anime offered a soulful yet true-to-original take.
