Born in Pasadena, Texas, Gary Keller originally had no intention of attending college. The summer after high school, he pursued a music career. Mid-summer, he told his parents it wasn't working out and he wanted to go to college. They had already applied to Baylor University, where he was accepted. After graduating in 1979, he moved to Austin and sold five houses his first month, becoming a VP within five years. In 1983, he partnered with Joe Williams to start Keller Williams Realtors and Keller Williams Commercial. The commercial company never took off, but the residential side did. In 1987, he created a division inside the residential company that became Keller Williams Realty International (KWRI).
