Playing career

Moore began his playing career at Tranmere Rovers as a defender under player-manager Ron Yeats, later becoming a forward under John King. In 1977, on King's advice, he played for Bill Foulkes' Chicago Sting team during the summer break, then returned to Tranmere. He spent a year there before joining Third Division Rotherham United, where he became top scorer during the club's promotion to the Second Division in the 1980–81 season. After 52 goals in three years, he left for Charlton Athletic in 1983, reportedly due to a clash with incoming manager George Kerr over access to the players' bar, described as a drink problem. He later played for Rochdale and returned to Tranmere in 1986 as John King's assistant manager, retiring from playing in 1989.

Managerial career

After several years at Rotherham, Moore joined Oldham Athletic in March 2005, helping the club avoid relegation. In his second season, he led Oldham to a mid-table finish and won the League One Manager of the Month Award for December 2005, but later left due to poor season ticket sales. He became manager of former club Tranmere Rovers in June 2006, bringing in nine players including Chris Shuker and Paul McLaren. In his first year, Tranmere finished 9th in League One after looking likely to reach the play-offs; the following season they finished 11th despite being top earlier. Moore was affectionately known as 'Ronnie Raw' by Tranmere fans for his extreme sense of humour. In September 2009, he began a second stint as Rotherham manager, assisted by Jimmy Mullen, and was unveiled to a standing ovation before a 3–0 win over Barnet. He won the League Two Manager of the Month Award for November 2009 and took Rotherham to the League Two play-off final, where they lost 3–2 to Dagenham & Redbridge. After a strong start to the 2010–11 season, a string of indifferent results led to his departure by mutual consent following a 5–0 defeat to Chesterfield, with Rotherham 6th in the table; failure to secure a play-off spot for a second successive season was cited. On 5 March 2012, after Les Parry's sacking, Moore returned to Tranmere as manager until the end of the season.
