Key facts and history

Cheng was originally named Twinnie Cheng, a name her sister created when an English teacher required an English name.[2][3] Her debut album "Sammi" sold 30,000 copies in Hong Kong in September 1990.[4] In 1995 she signed with Warner Music Group and released "Can't Let You Go", which achieved triple platinum status with 175,000 copies sold.[5][6] Her first Mandarin album "Worth It" sold 2.2 million copies across Asia, becoming her best-selling album.[7]

She held her first solo concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum in November 1996, with all eight shows sold out.[8][9] She was voted the most popular female artist by TVB in 1996, 1997, and 2001.[10] At sixteen years old, Cheng joined the entertainment business after placing third in the 1988 New Talent Singing Awards, which led to a recording deal.[11]
