As of 2015, its population was 5,694,245, and its largest city is Zhanjiang.[1]
Key facts and history
The peninsula has two separate volcanic fields, including a Pleistocene–Holocene field west of Zhanjiang.[2] A third volcanic field is responsible for some offshore islands.[2] Hepu National Sanctuary of Dugongs was created west of the peninsula to protect endangered marine mammals.[3] Leizhou Bay is included within a sanctuary for Chinese white dolphins, which hosts the country's second-largest population of this species.[3]
What the cited sources add
According to the source, during the 19th century, cities on the Leizhou Peninsula were open to trade.[4] The same source reports that dugongs are still present in the area, though only in small numbers.[3] In nearby waters, including the Gulf of Tonkin, Bryde's whales, minke whales, and whale sharks continue to be observed.[3] Historically, critically endangered species like the North Pacific right whale and the western gray whale were seen around the peninsula during winter and spring for calving.[5]
