Reception
Set in the Philadelphia neighborhood of Kensington, a place known for crime, prostitution, and open-air drug markets, the series Long Bright River follows a closed-off cop. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 73% approval rating from 22 reviews, with an average score of 7.3 out of 10. The site’s consensus notes that while the story takes some unnecessary detours, Amanda Seyfried’s steely performance carries it to a compelling finish. On Metacritic, the series earned a weighted average of 66 out of 100 from 14 reviews, which falls into the “generally favorable” category.
NPR’s John Powers praised the show for depicting characters in an area whose decline reflects a profound social collapse, calling it not just a mystery but a heartfelt story about wounded communities, families, and individuals trying to make things better. Seyfried’s performance in the lead role drew critical acclaim, earning her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Television Film. She also received nominations at the 5th Astra TV Awards and the 30th Satellite Awards in the same category.
