Background and release

Just Mustard put out the single “I Am You” in November 2021, hinting it was for a second album. The band announced that album, Heart Under, on 23 February 2022, with a 27 May release date and another single, “Still.” Two more singles, “Mirrors” and “Seed,” came out before the album. They recorded and self-produced it at Attica Studios in County Donegal, aiming for the feel of driving through a tunnel with the windows down.

Critical reception

Heart Under received critical acclaim upon release. On Metacritic, it scored 89 out of 100 from eleven critic reviews, indicating "universal acclaim", while Album of the Year gave an average of 85 out of 100 from 17 critic ratings. Will Richards of NME described it as "thrillingly untraditional noise rock" with the band having left behind the shoegaze tag. Poppie Platt of The Daily Telegraph gave a five-star review, finding it moody and dark with industrial guitars and no typical choruses. Max Freedman of Paste called it "a tornado of distorted dissonance" and said it places the band among the vanguard of the British Isles' post-punk scene. Robin Murray of Clash described it as a striking, fantastically original work tapping into animalistic emotion. Siobhán Kane of The Irish Times wrote that it speaks to the power of resilience. Kyle Kohner of The Line of Best Fit noted that while the blue atmosphere can be one-note, it frequently froths with the type of music more post-punk revivalists should aspire to make.
