Build-up

Lyon were appearing in their fifth Coupe de la Ligue final, having won the competition once in 2001 and finished runner-up in 1996, 2007 and 2012. Paris Saint-Germain had won three of their four previous finals, with victories in 1995, 1998 and 2008, and a loss in 2000. PSG manager Laurent Blanc had previously won the 2009 final with Bordeaux. Six days before the final, Lyon defeated PSG 1–0 in a league match, which was only PSG's second league defeat of the season.

Lyon manager Rémi Garde stated that the two matches should not be compared, noting the different venues and competitions. PSG were without injured Ligue 1 top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimović, who was hurt in a Champions League match on 2 April; Edinson Cavani moved to centre-forward in his place. First-choice goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu was rested, with Nicolas Douchez starting. The Coupe de la Ligue final had been held at the Stade de France every year since 1998. Both clubs received equal ticket quotas, with ticketing information released on 12 February 2014.

Route to the final

Lyon entered the competition in the Round of 16 on 18 December 2013, defeating Reims 3–2 at home. In the quarter-finals on 15 January 2014, they beat Marseille 2–1 at home. Lyon's semi-final on 5 February was a 2–1 home win over Ligue 2 side Troyes. PSG also entered in the Round of 16 on 18 December, beating holders Saint-Étienne at home 2–1 after extra time. In the quarter-finals on 14 January, PSG won 3–1 away at Bordeaux. PSG's semi-final was a 2–1 victory away at Nantes.

Match

Edinson Cavani opened the scoring for PSG after 178 seconds, tapping in a cross from left-back Maxwell. PSG defender Alex had a goal disallowed for offside, and Cavani converted a penalty won when Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes fouled Lucas. Cavani missed a chance for a first-half hat-trick from eight yards. In the first ten minutes of the second half, Alexandre Lacazette scored for Lyon, running from the halfway line and shooting from 20 yards. Lyon dominated possession thereafter but created few further chances.
