The story follows Boston Police Detective Nick Walker, who is murdered by his partner Bobby Hayes after they steal gold during a drug bust. Upon death, Nick is recruited into the Rest in Peace Department (R.I.P.D.), an agency that captures Deados—souls that evaded judgment. He is partnered with Roycephus 'Roy' Pulsipher, an Old West lawman. The two investigate a conspiracy involving the gold, which is part of an artifact called the Staff of Jericho that can reverse the tunnel to the afterlife.
