Ghosthouse (film)

Ghosthouse (released in Italy as *La casa 3–Ghosthouse*) is a 1988 Italian horror film. Umberto Lenzi wrote and directed it, with Lara Wendel and Donald O'Brien in starring roles. The story follows a deserted house where anyone who enters is tormented by visions of a ghostly girl and her haunted doll.

The plot begins in 1967, when Sam Baker locks his young daughter Henrietta in the basement after she kills her cat with scissors. He tells his wife he believes the girl is cursed, but his wife disagrees. Soon after, an unseen killer murders both parents upstairs while Henrietta cries below, clutching a clown doll that plays eerie lullaby music.

Twenty years later, amateur radio operator Paul Rogers picks up a signal of two people screaming. He tracks the source to the old Baker house and travels there with his girlfriend, Martha. A hostile caretaker named Valkos tries to scare them off. The couple breaks in and finds four young intruders: siblings Jim, Tina, and Mark Dalen, plus Mark’s girlfriend Susan. Jim’s voice matches the screams Paul recorded the night before, though Jim denies it.

In the basement, Jim encounters Henrietta’s spirit, who smiles at him while holding the doll as the lullaby plays. A rusty fan blade flies off and kills him. Valkos later attacks the others, but they escape. Police assume Valkos murdered Jim. Paul and Martha investigate and learn that Sam Baker, a funeral director, stole items from the dead—including Henrietta’s doll, taken from a dead child.

Paul and Martha return to warn the others, but supernatural events kill most of the group. Only Paul, Martha, and Susan survive. Before leaving, Susan asks who Henrietta was; Paul says she was an ordinary girl until her father gave her the doll. Later, while walking downtown, Martha sees the same clown doll in a store window. It smiles evilly. As Paul crosses the street, the traffic light changes from red to green, and a bus hits him. Martha screams.

By the late 1980s, the Italian genre film industry was shrinking. Independent companies like Aristide Massaccesi’s Filmirage—founded in 1980—began making low-budget horror for foreign markets. Filmirage produced *Ghosthouse* alongside other films such as *Interzone* and *Stage Fright*. Though credits list Cinthia McGavin as screenwriter, Lenzi wrote the script himself.
