Echo is a highly advanced, self-learning universal adaptive robot created by Dr. William 'Widow' and his team at Omnica Corporation's predecessor organization, though her true origins remain shrouded in mystery until revealed later. Unlike other Omnic units, she possesses the unique ability to mimic the abilities of any hero she observes, making her a versatile tool for research and combat. Initially designed as a test subject for the OMICRON project, she eventually gained sentience and chose to join Overwatch, becoming one of its most valuable assets before the organization's dissolution.

After escaping containment, she encountered Winston and Mercy, who recognized her potential not just as a weapon but as a unique life form.
