Kyoya Ootori

The Shadow King who runs the show with data, debt, and a perfectly timed threat.

Kyoya Ootori serves as the vice-president and strategic mastermind behind the Ouran High School Host Club. At 17 years old, this calculating second-year student operates as the club's official accountant and manager while unofficially ruling from the shadows as the 'Shadow King.' Unlike his flamboyant co-founder Tamaki Suoh, Kyoya relies on cold pragmatism and extensive research to ensure the group's success. He is known for keeping detailed dossiers on every student at the school and carrying various memo-keeping devices, including a black notebook or clipboard. His ability to gauge financial and social benefits allows him to run the club behind the scenes, influencing both Tamaki and their guests while maintaining a cool, detached exterior.

Lore & Background

Kyoya is best friends with Tamaki despite their opposing natures; he often acts as the grounding force for Tamaki's idealism. Raised to remain in a defined role as the youngest of four children meant only to support his family name, Kyoya eventually breaks from these expectations under Tamaki's influence. His background includes living with his father, a wealthy zaibatsu owner specializing in hospital management. The author has noted that if she had allotted forty pages instead of fifty for the first chapter, she would have cut Kyoya entirely. He is immediately aware of Haruhi Fujioka's gender upon her entrance to the third music room through his research. While he rarely entertains guests, preferring to take notes on events, he possesses admirers who view him as the cool 'glasses' type.

Reader's Guide

Kyoya is defined by his low blood pressure, which makes him slow to wake in the morning, and his habit of carrying memo-keeping devices like a black notebook or tablet. He owns a cat named Noir, who is very attached to him; Tamaki periodically receives emails containing only photos of this cat. When visiting the United States, Tamaki makes an effort to meet up with Kyoya, while the twins miss him so much they convince themselves that a lookalike ghost of an Ootori ancestor is his 'living ghost.' His relationships evolve significantly: he helps Haruhi see through his mask to understand his true nature, and while he calculates actions for benefit, the club would not succeed without his resourcefulness. He stays in the US after high school, distinct from Tamaki who moves to Boston with Haruhi.
