In Their Own Story

The ice was rough that evening, scarred by a hundred passes and a dozen face-offs. A lamplighter's glow bled through the open sides of the rink, and the crowd pressed close, their breath a white fog in the January air. The Ottawa captain wiped his stick on his thigh, felt the grain of the wood, and skated to the blue line. Across the ice, the Montreal man squared his shoulders, stick low, eyes locked. The ref dropped the puck. It hissed across the frozen surface, and for a breath the whole world was just two men, a stick, and a round black disc. Then the crowd roared, and the night belonged to Ottawa.
