Renée Fleming

Soprano e atriz americana com amplo reconhecimento clássico e popular.

Renée Lynn Fleming was born on February 14, 1959, in Indiana, Pennsylvania, to two music teachers. Her great-grandparents were born in Prague before emigrating to the United States. She grew up in Churchville, New York, and attended Churchville-Chili High School. She earned a Bachelor of Music Education in 1981 from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, where she studied with Patricia Misslin and also sang with a jazz trio at a local bar. Jazz saxophonist Illinois Jacquet invited her to tour with his big band, but she chose instead to pursue graduate studies at the Eastman School of Music, earning a Master of Music in 1983 under voice teacher John Maloy. While there, she performed Zerlina in a 1982 production of Don Giovanni conducted by David Effron, alongside Gene Scheer and Mark Thomsen. She spent several summers at the Aspen Music Festival and School, studying with Jan DeGaetani and working with director Edward Berkeley. There, she played Anne Sexton in Conrad Susa’s Transformations (1983), gave her first performance as the Countess Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro (1984)—a role she later used for major opera house debuts—and sang Anne in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress (1987). She also performed scenes from Der Rosenkavalier, and the Marschallin became one of her signature roles worldwide. A Fulbright Scholarship in 1985 allowed her to study in Europe with Arleen Augér and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, as well as lieder with Hartmut Höll in Frankfurt. She sang in jazz clubs to fund further study at Juilliard, where she performed roles including Musetta in La bohème and the Wife in Menotti’s Tamu-Tamu. Her Juilliard voice teacher was Beverley Peck Johnson. She graduated with an Artist Diploma in 1986 and received a Richard F. Gold Career Grant in 1987.

Fleming began professional work with small concerts and opera companies while still at Juilliard. In the 1980s, she frequently sang in the Musica Viva series at the New York Unitarian Church of All Souls. In 1984, she performed nine songs by Hugo Wolf in the world premiere of Eliot Feld’s ballet Adieu, a piece she reprised in 1987.

Fleming is an American soprano and actress whose work spans opera, concerts, recordings, theater, film, and major public events. She has won five Grammy Awards from 18 nominations, received the National Medal of Arts, and was among five honorees at the 2023 Kennedy Center Honors. Her other honors include the World Economic Forum’s Crystal Award, France’s Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur, Germany’s Cross of the Order of Merit, Sweden’s Polar Music Prize, and honorary membership in the Royal Academy of Music. Unusually for an opera singer, she has gained recognition beyond classical music. Her voice is a full lyric soprano, and she has performed coloratura, lyric, and lighter spinto roles in Italian, German, French, Czech, and Russian, as well as English. A significant part of her career involves new music, including world premieres of operas, concert pieces, and songs written for her by composers such as André Previn, Caroline Shaw, Kevin Puts, Anders Hillborg, Nico Muhly, Henri Dutilleux, Brad Mehldau, and Wayne Shorter. In 2008, she became the first woman in the Metropolitan Opera’s 125-year history to solo headline a season-opening night gala. Conductor Sir Georg Solti said he had met maybe two sopranos with her quality of singing.

Beyond opera, Fleming has sung and recorded lieder, chansons, jazz, musical theatre, and indie rock, collaborating with artists including Luciano Pavarotti, Lou Reed, Wynton Marsalis, Paul Simon, Andrea Bocelli, Sting, John Prine, Joe Jackson, and Dead & Company. She was a 2018 Tony Award nominee and has acted on Broadway and in theaters in London, Los Angeles, and Chicago. She has recorded songs for film soundtracks, including two that won the Academy Award for Best Picture: The Shape of Water and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. She has made numerous television appearances and is the only classical singer to have performed the U.S. National Anthem at the Super Bowl. In July 2025, she made her directing debut with Mozart’s Così fan tutte at the Aspen Music Festival and School.

Fleming is a prominent advocate for awareness of music and the creative arts’ impact on health and neuroscience, winning a Research!America award for Impact on Public Opinion. In May 2023, the World Health Organization appointed her a Goodwill Ambassador for Arts and Health. In 2024, she launched the Renée Fleming Neuroarts Investigator Awards with the NeuroArts Blueprint Initiative at Johns Hopkins University and the Aspen Institute; the annual grants fund interdisciplinary research by early-career scientists working with arts practitioners. In April 2024, Penguin Random House published her anthology Music and Mind: Harnessing the Arts for Health and Wellness. In January 2025, she was named an inaugural member of the World Economic Forum Global Arts and Culture Council.
