Development
After the 2012 Syndicate reboot, Mike Diskett, producer and lead programmer of Syndicate Wars, was displeased with its lack of similarity to earlier entries. He founded 5 Lives Studios in Brisbane, including team members who had worked on Grand Theft Auto, L.A. Noire, and Darksiders, to create a spiritual successor to his 1993 game. Unlike the reboot, a first-person shooter, the studio built on the original real-time tactics gameplay with a fixed camera system and character classes. Announced on Kickstarter on 28 June 2013 with a US$546,875 goal, the project was successfully funded on 29 July 2013 with US$720,832 raised. The game released for Windows, macOS, and Linux on 28 August 2015, with a four-player cooperative update in July 2016. The soundtrack was composed by Russell Shaw, who worked on Syndicate and Syndicate Wars.
Plot
Satellite Reign is set in an unnamed fictional city called The City. The corporation Dracogenics rises to prominence after releasing Resurrection-Tech, a prototype offering immortality. Dracogenics engages in corporate crime, bribing politicians with immortality for control, leading to privatization of city services and full control over the police. Civil unrest is suppressed, but a rival corporation emerges and launches anti-Dracogenics attacks. The player controls this rival corporation and must overthrow Dracogenics.
