One Direction were an English–Irish boy band formed on the seventh series of British television singing competition The X Factor in 2010, where they finished third. They signed with Simon Cowell's record label Syco Records and later with Columbia Records in North America. The group released five studio albums, ten extended plays, seventeen singles, two video albums, and seventeen music videos.

One Direction's debut studio album Up All Night was released on 18 November 2011 and topped charts in sixteen countries. Its lead single 'What Makes You Beautiful' reached number one on the UK Singles Chart and number four on the US Billboard Hot 100, later certified four times platinum in the US and six times platinum in Australia. Subsequent singles 'Gotta Be You' and 'One Thing' became top ten hits in the UK. Their second album Take Me Home, released 9 November 2012, sold 540,000 copies in its first week in the US and went to number one in thirty-five countries. The lead single 'Live While We're Young' recorded the highest first-week sales for a song by a non-US artist.
