Identity
Paris Saint-Germain have represented both the city of Paris and the royal town of Saint-Germain-en-Laye since their foundation. The club's traditional colours are red, blue and white: red and blue are Parisian colours referencing revolutionary figures Lafayette and Jean Sylvain Bailly, while white symbolises French royalty and Saint-Germain-en-Laye. The crest features the Eiffel Tower in red on a blue background for Paris, and a white fleur de lys from the coat of arms of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, recalling that King Louis XIV was born there.
All PSG crests have included these three historical colours. The club's most distinctive shirts have been predominantly red, blue or white, with the other two colours also present. The official mascot, Germain the Lynx, wears the traditional colours and was unveiled during the 2010 Tournoi de Paris for the club's 40th anniversary. The first official anthem, "Allez Paris!", was recorded in 1971 by Belgian actress and singer Annie Cordy, who was a founding supporter and later named PSG's official godmother.
A second anthem, "Allez Paris‑Saint-Germain!" by Les Parisiens, replaced it in 1977 and was produced by long-time PSG leader Charles Talar. A new version of that anthem, set to the tune of "Go West" by Village People with lyrics rewritten with fan input, was recorded in 2010 and serves as the current official anthem.
Statistics
Paris Saint-Germain are the most decorated club in French history, with 60 major official trophies. Their domestic haul includes a record 14 Ligue 1 titles, 16 Coupe de France wins, nine Coupe de la Ligue triumphs, and 14 Trophée des Champions victories. On the European and world stage, they have lifted two UEFA Champions League trophies, two UEFA Super Cups, one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, one UEFA Intertoto Cup, and one FIFA Intercontinental Cup. Adding one Ligue 2 title brings their total official silverware to 61.
PSG became the first French team to complete a continental treble by winning the 2024–25 Champions League alongside that season's Ligue 1 and Coupe de France. They then became the first French club to claim the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup in 2025, securing France's first club world title. With the 2024 Trophée des Champions already in hand, PSG achieved an unprecedented sextuple, a feat previously managed only by Barcelona in 2009 and Bayern Munich in 2020.
The club holds the record for the longest unbroken run in France's top division, with 52 consecutive seasons in Ligue 1 since 1974–75. They are also the only side to win Ligue 1 while leading from matchday one to the final day (2022–23), to win the Coupe de France without conceding a goal (1992–93 and 2016–17), to claim five straight Coupe de la Ligue titles (2014–2018), four consecutive Coupe de France trophies (2015–2018), and eight successive Trophée des Champions (2013–2020).
Rivalries
Le Classique is the rivalry between PSG and Olympique de Marseille, widely regarded as the biggest in French football and one of the most notable fixtures worldwide. It involves the two most successful French clubs and the only French teams to have won major European trophies. The rivalry began in earnest in the 1980s after PSG won their first league title in 1986 and Marseille was acquired by Bernard Tapie, with tensions heightened by match-fixing accusations.
In the 1990s, French media company Canal+ purchased PSG in 1991 partly to challenge Marseille's dominance, and media coverage promoted the animosity. Both clubs became the main contenders for national honours, though they were less successful in the 2000s. In the 2010s, PSG's investment from Qatar Sports Investments allowed the club to dominate domestically, further intensifying the rivalry. Matches require heightened security due to passionate fan support.
A female equivalent exists between Paris Saint-Germain FC (women) and OL Lyonnes, referred to as the women's Le Classique. PSG first faced Lyon in 1994, but the rivalry emerged after PSG's acquisition by QSI in 2012, with both sides consistently competing for league honours.
Other sports
Paris Saint-Germain Handball is the handball branch of PSG FC. It began in 1941 as Patriotes d'Asnières, changing names and locations before joining PSG for the 1992–93 season. After splitting from PSG in 2002 and facing a downturn, it became Paris Handball. Qatar Sports Investments bought the club in 2012, giving it its current name. Since then, PSG Handball has become the top team in French handball. PSG Esports, launched in 2016, competes in EA Sports FC and has also fielded teams in League of Legends, Rocket League, Dota 2, and Rainbow Six Siege. It has won titles in Dota 2, League of Legends, EA Sports FC, Brawl Stars, Rocket League, and Rainbow Six Siege.
