The RS:X was a windsurfing class chosen by the ISAF to take over from the Mistral One Design Class at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Its design shared traits with Formula Windsurfing, particularly in being built for strong performance in light to moderate winds. The equipment consisted of a board with a daggerboard and a sail of a fixed size. The board was 286 cm long and 93 cm wide. The board alone weighed 15.5 kg, while the ready-to-sail weight was over 19 kg—nearly twice as heavy as standard competition formula boards, but similar to raceboards like the previous Olympic Mistral One Design (which weighed 17 kg ready to sail). The RS:X represented a middle ground between traditional raceboards, effective in 5 to 35 knots (3 to 18 m/s), and formula boards, which excelled in 12 to 30 knots (5 to 15 m/s), and proved competitive with older raceboards in medium winds. The RS:X sail is a distinct model, not derived from the Neil Pryde V8. The IQFoil class was chosen to replace the RS:X starting with the 2024 Summer Olympics.
