The Firefly was designed by Uffa Fox as a one-design racer and first built in 1946. Initial production was by Fairey Marine in the United Kingdom from 1946 until the end of 1972. The first four production boats were purchased by Sir Geoffrey Loules, commodore of the Itchenor Sailing Club, and named Fe, Fi, Fo, and Fum. The National Maritime Museum Cornwall notes that the Firefly was one of the first production dinghies built in large numbers, long before glass-reinforced plastic boats, and that its initial cost of £65 put dinghy sailing within financial reach of many people. The museum holds a Firefly (hull number 4, named Fum), not Fe.

The Firefly holds significance as an Olympic class that competed at the 1948 Olympics, where the gold medal was won by Danish sailor Paul Elvstrøm. Although designed for a crew of two, it was raced as a single-handed boat at those Games, and was replaced in 1952 by the Finn. The design evolved over time: initially built predominantly of hot-moulded plywood, glassfibre construction was authorized in 1965, a rotating mast was introduced in 1970, and a foam sandwich version was later built by Omega Boats. Production passed through several builders—Fairey Marine, Vic Lewis Boats, Knight and Pink Marine, Omega Boats, Porter Boats, Rondar Raceboats, and Whitecap Composites in the US—before Ovington Boats took over in 2023. The boat remains in production and is supported by the National Firefly Association, which organizes racing events. Its Portsmouth Yardstick handicap is 1168 and D-PN is 99.6.
