Last updated

Bang Soo-hyun, born 13 September 1972, is a former South Korean badminton player who ranked among the world's elite women's singles competitors in the 1990s. She matched up against contemporaries Susi Susanti of Indonesia and Ye Zhaoying of China, building a reputation for combining powerful shots with quick movement. After winning gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, she retired from competition just before her 24th birthday. In 2019, she was elected to the World Badminton Hall of Fame.

Career

At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Bang advanced through the draw with a first-round bye, then beat Catrine Bengtsson of Sweden and Hisuko Mizui of Japan. In the quarterfinals, she edged Indonesia's Sarwendah Kusumawardhani 11–2, 3–11, 12–11. She then defeated reigning world champion Tang Jiuhong of China 11–3, 11–2 in the semifinals, but lost the final to Susi Susanti 11–5, 5–11, 3–11, taking the silver medal. Four years later in Atlanta, Bang won gold without dropping a single game in any match.

She beat Susanti in the semifinals 11–9, 11–8 and topped Mia Audina in the final 11–6, 11–7. At the IBF World Championships, she earned silver in 1993 as runner-up to Susanti and bronze in 1995. Bang also captured the 1994 Asian Games title and the 1996 All England Open over Ye Zhaoying, having been runner-up at that event in both 1992 and 1993.
