History

Designed by architect Georg Flinkerbush, the venue includes a restaurant and a warm-up hall. It first hosted basketball for the 1972 Summer Olympics. In 1975, it appeared as a location in the film Rollerball. The 1978 FIBA European Champions Cup final took place there, with Real Madrid beating Mobilgirgi Varese 75-67. On 23 April 1983, it was the site of the 1983 Eurovision Song Contest. Irish pop band Westlife performed there on 5 May 2001 during their Where Dreams Come True Tour supporting their album Coast to Coast. The arena shut down on 1 February 2003 for unknown reasons. It reopened in 2007 under new operator MPP Entertainment. After renovations completed in 2011, the newly promoted Bayern Munich basketball team moved in, and the venue was rebranded as Audi Dome. Since 2023, its naming rights have been allocated to car manufacturer BMW, which is headquartered in Munich.
