Reader's Guide
The 64th Annual Grammy Awards marked a significant shift in the Recording Academy's operations and ceremony logistics. It was the first Grammy ceremony not held in New York City or Los Angeles since 1973, and the first ever in Las Vegas, reflecting the academy's adaptability amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The postponement and relocation underscored the ongoing impact of the pandemic on major events. The ceremony also introduced notable rule changes: the number of nominees in General Field categories increased from eight to ten; nomination review committees were eliminated, with nominees decided solely by Recording Academy votes; and voting was restricted to ten categories plus the four major fields to improve voting quality. Jon Batiste's five wins, including Album of the Year, highlighted his broad recognition across genres. The ceremony also faced controversy: Kanye West was banned from performing due to 'concerning online behavior', and Foo Fighters canceled their performance after the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins, with a tribute montage aired in his memory.
