Celestial Brush Ink
Every stroke of salvation is paid for in ink and courage.
Celestial Brush Ink is the vital resource that fuels Amaterasu's Celestial Brush, the legendary tool she wields to reshape the shattered world of Kushinada. Without ink, the Brush is silent; with it, Amaterasu can call down the sun, summon storm winds, grow ancient trees, or split the sky with lightning. Managing ink—conserving it in tough fights, spending it boldly on puzzles, and replenishing it through battle—forms the core strategic loop of Okami's design.

Lore & Background
In the mythic telling of Kushinada, the Celestial Brush was a divine instrument forged in the heavens, its ink drawn from the very essence of creation. When the eight Calamities shattered the world and drained its color, the Brush became the last thread connecting Amaterasu to the forces of order. Each drop of ink she expends is a fragment of that primordial creative force, poured into the broken landscape to mend it.
The ink itself carries no consciousness, yet those who have witnessed its use describe it as warm, almost alive, as though the pigment remembers the shape of the world it is meant to restore. Painting a tree from bare earth, coaxing water from dry riverbeds, or splitting a storm with a single lightning stroke—each act draws from the same wellspring, and the Brush never asks permission. It simply flows, black and absolute, into whatever form Amaterasu wills.
As the journey progresses and the world slowly recovers its color, the ink seems to deepen in richness. Early strokes are thin and tentative; later ones are bold, saturated, and resolute. Fans often note that the visual language of the ink mirrors Amaterasu's own growing confidence, from a timid white pup to a god in her own right.
Reader's Guide
Ink is the universal currency of the Celestial Brush. Every power you paint—Sun, Moon, Wind, Water, Tree, Lightning, and others—draws from the same shared pool. The pool is finite at any given moment, so choosing which stroke to commit is the central tactical decision in nearly every encounter.
Visually, ink manifests as thick, calligraphic black strokes that ripple and dissolve after their effect plays out. A Sun stroke blooms as a radiant golden circle; a Wind stroke sweeps as a broad, sweeping arc; a Tree stroke erupts as a branching, root-and-leaf silhouette. All share the same sumi-e brushwork texture, making the resource feel like a single living medium.
In combat, lower-cost strokes like Wind or Moon are safer to spam, while high-cost strokes like Lightning or Tree should be reserved for turning points. In exploration, ink is the key to progression: painting a Tree to cross a chasm, a Water stroke to fill a dry channel, or a Sun stroke to reveal hidden paths. If you run dry, you must defeat nearby enemies to regenerate the pool before attempting the next puzzle.
Strategic tip: always check your ink gauge before committing to a multi-stroke puzzle. A single misfired stroke on an empty pool can strand you in a section with no immediate enemies to farm, forcing a risky backtrack.
Did You Know?
- Ink is not split into separate pools per power; every brush stroke, from a simple Wind gust to a full Lightning strike, draws from one shared reservoir, forcing players to make real-time cost-benefit decisions mid-fight.
- The Celestial Brush powers unlock progressively throughout the game, so the range of strokes available to the player—and the strategic depth of ink management—grows as Amaterasu's journey advances.
