Offseason

On December 5, Danny Cater and Ossie Chavarria were traded to the New York Yankees for Al Downing and Frank Fernández. Two days later, George Lauzerique and Ted Kubiak went to the Milwaukee Brewers for Diego Seguí and Ray Oyler.

Regular season

During the season, rumors circulated that the Athletics might relocate to Toronto. At the end of May, the team stood at 25–23, eight games behind the first-place Minnesota Twins. On September 21, Vida Blue threw a no-hitter against the Twins, winning 6–0; a walk to Harmon Killebrew prevented a perfect game. The club hired Harry Caray for play-by-play, but Finley wanted him to change his broadcast chant from "Holy Cow" to "Holy Mule"; Caray refused and left after the season. On May 18, Roberto Peña was traded to the Brewers for John Donaldson. In the June 4 draft, the Athletics selected Dan Ford with the 18th pick. On June 11, Al Downing and Tito Francona were traded to the Brewers for Steve Hovley.
