Key facts and history

A 2009 revision by Rudman, Pola, and Gosliner described several new species.[2] That revision showed Bornella japonica is a junior synonym of Bornella hermanni.[2] The revision included four new species: Bornella dotoides, Bornella johnsonorum, Bornella valdae, and Bornella pele.[2] Other valid species include Bornella anguilla, Bornella calcarata, and Bornella excepta.[3]

Bornella irvingi was described by Edmunds and Preece in 1996.[2] Bornella sarape was described by Bertsch in 1980.[3] Bornella simplex was described by Eliot in 1904.[3] Bornella stellifer has several synonyms including Bornella hancockana and Bornella arborescens.[3]

The name Bornella semperi is considered a nomen nudum.[3]

What the cited sources add

That revision was based on morphological characters and included a preliminary phylogeny of the family Bornellidae.[2] The revision confirmed that Bornella japonica from Japan is a junior synonym of Bornella hermanni from eastern Australia.[2]
