Fighters from Mars
Unauthorized newspaper adaptations of The War of the Worlds.
Two unauthorized rewrites of H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds were called Fighters from Mars. One ran in the New York Evening Journal, the other in the Boston Post, with each story moved to the paper's own city. The editors cut most scientific passages and the narrator's questionable actions. Wells may have accidentally allowed this, as a March 1898 letter in The Critic suggested it might be "a terrible mistake." Robert H. Goddard credited these versions with sparking his early rocket interest.
