The novel was an expansion of a shorter version that appeared in Amazing Stories in July 1959.[1] Robert Silverberg, an American author, wrote the science fiction novel Collision Course, which Avalon Books initially released in hardcover format during 1961.[2]

Silverberg then sold a shorter version to Amazing Stories, where it appeared in 1959.[2] The full novel was first published in hardcover in 1961 by Avalon Books.[2] A Tor paperback edition appeared in October 1988.[1] Silverberg intended the work to be a serial for Astounding Science Fiction, but John W. Campbell turned it down.[2]

Hilja Brinis translated the novel into Italian as Il sogno del tecnarca, with that translation appearing in 1961.[1]
