The saga begins with The Demon Awakens, in which the village of Dundalis is destroyed. Elbryan Wyndon is taken in by the small, pointy-eared, and graceful Touel'alfar elves (who do not have wings) and trained as a ranger named Nightbird, while Jilseponie 'Pony' Ault is raised in Palmaris by the Chilichunks. Avelyn Desbris, a monk of the Abellican Church, learns gemstone magic but leaves the Church after witnessing its corruption and receiving a vision of the awakened Demon Dactyl, taking with him around 20-30 magical gemstones. The three unite to defeat the dactyl at Mount Aida, at the cost of Avelyn's sacrifice.

The second novel, The Demon Spirit, follows Elbryan and Pony as they fight the demon's remaining servants. The Church captures the Chilichunks and their friend Bradwarden. Master Jojonah, a high-ranking Church member who seeks to reveal Avelyn's truth, is killed. In The Demon Apostle, Elbryan, Pony, and their companions confront Father Abbot Markwart, his lackey Marcalo De'Unnero, and the spirit of Bestesbulzibar. De'Unnero is defeated, Markwart is slain, and Elbryan dies from wounds inflicted by De'Unnero in a personal duel (De'Unnero, at the time a former monk and later a were-tiger, had been stripped of his rank).

Mortalis introduces Aydrian Wyndon, Elbryan and Pony's child, and Brynn Dharielle, a To-Gai girl turned ranger. The second trilogy includes Ascendance, where the Touel'alfar's plans go awry due to Aydrian's arrogance; Transcendence, where Brynn frees her people from Behrenese tyranny; and Immortalis, which brings all main characters together to combat the remaining evil.
