Plot summary
Dr. Randall Forth convinces his colleague, Dr. Jay Allison, to be hypnotized, bringing out a second personality named Jason Allison. Jason is outgoing and a skilled mountaineer, unlike the detached, clinical Jay. Jason takes charge of an expedition into the Hellers to recruit Trailmen volunteers for a medical study. The group includes Rafe Scott, Regis Hastur, Kyla Raineach, a Renunciate guide, and others. During the journey, the two personalities keep switching. Jason develops romantic feelings for Kyla. Hostile Trailwomen attack the party, which causes the Jay personality to resurface. Upon reaching the Trailmen nest where Jay/Jason once lived, he is recognized. The Sky People's Old Ones question why he brought an armed group. Jay/Jason explains his goal to cure the 48-year-fever, and Regis Hastur adds his own plea for help. One hundred Trailmen agree to join. The group returns to the Terran Trade City. Months later, a serum is created. When Regis Hastur visits, the encounter triggers Jay/Jason to blend into a third, more balanced personality.
