Plot summary
After the Khitomer Conference, a disillusioned James T. Kirk resigns from Starfleet and accepts an offer from a woman named Teilani to protect her homeworld, Chal. Kirk uncovers a corrupt conspiracy involving rogue Starfleet and Klingon factions exploiting Chal's youth-restoring properties. Production
After publishing their book Federation, Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens were contacted by Pocket Books editor Kevin Ryan about collaborating with William Shatner on a new book. Shatner had just finished filming his role as James T. Kirk in Star Trek Generations, which depicted the character's death. Both Shatner and Pocket Books wanted the story to continue in novel form, set immediately before the events of Generations. The manuscript received a positive response, and Pocket Books inquired about a possible sequel.
