Nottingham Forest won the first of two consecutive League Cup titles in 1978, beating Liverpool in a replay at Old Trafford. They defended the title in 1979 by defeating Southampton 3–2. Forest later won two more consecutive titles in 1989 and 1990.

The EFL Cup is a knockout competition open to all 72 English Football League and 20 Premier League clubs. The final has been a single leg at Wembley Stadium since 1967, except for replays (last in 1997) and a period at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium (2001–2007).
