Charles Joseph Whitman was born on June 24, 1941, in Lake Worth, Florida, and died on August 1, 1966, after carrying out the University of Texas tower shooting—one of the first mass shootings in modern American history to receive extensive national news coverage. Whitman, a former Marine and an architectural engineering student at the University of Texas at Austin, killed 17 people and injured 31 others on August 1, 1966. His attacks began the previous night, when he stabbed his mother and his wife to death in their separate homes. Armed with several rifles and other weapons, he shot and killed three people inside UT Austin’s Main Building, then reached the 28th-floor observation deck of the building’s clock tower.

Childhood

From there, he fired randomly at people for 96 minutes, killing eleven more and wounding 31 others before Austin police shot him dead. Whitman grew up in Lake Worth, Florida, as the oldest of three sons in a prosperous but troubled household ruled by his physically abusive father, Charles A. Whitman Sr. He showed exceptional intelligence early on, becoming an Eagle Scout at age 12, and joined the U.S. Marine Corps at 18. He served at Guantanamo Bay and reached the rank of Lance Corporal, but his military record included disciplinary issues. After receiving an engineering scholarship, he enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin in 1961, where he initially did well academically before his performance slipped.

Connally commission

In the years before the attack, Whitman faced serious personal and psychological struggles. He sought psychiatric help at the university health center and reportedly told a counselor about violent thoughts. He also complained of severe headaches and episodes of irrational rage that he found disturbing and described at length in his own writings. An autopsy after his death found a glioblastoma multiforme tumor pressing on his amygdala, a brain area linked to emotional regulation and fear response, which has led to ongoing debate among medical experts and historians about how much the tumor may have influenced his violent behavior.

The University of Texas tower shooting had a lasting effect on American law enforcement and public safety policy. It is widely credited with prompting the creation of SWAT teams across the United States, as police were initially unprepared to deal with a sniper positioned at such a high vantage point. Whitman’s case also became a landmark in studying neurological factors in criminal behavior, and his story has been the subject of many documentaries, books, and academic studies. Charles Whitman was born on June 24, 1941, in Lake Worth, Florida, the oldest of three sons of Margaret E. (née Hodges) and Charles Adolphus Whitman Jr. His father grew up in an orphanage in Savannah, Georgia, and considered himself a self-made man.

Margaret was 17 when they met. The marriage was marked by domestic violence; Whitman’s father was an admitted authoritarian who provided for his family but demanded near perfection from everyone. He was physically and emotionally abusive toward his wife and children. Neighbor Judi Faulch later said she could not recall how many times her own parents had called police in the 1940s and ’50s because of Whitman’s father beating his wife, children, and family pets.

As a boy, Whitman was described as polite and rarely lost his temper. He was very intelligent—an IQ test at age six gave him a score of 139. His parents encouraged his academic success, and any sign of failure or laziness was met with discipline, often physical, from his father. Margaret was a devout Roman Catholic and raised her sons in the faith.

The Whitman brothers regularly attended Mass with their mother, and all three served as altar boys at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Lake Worth. Whitman’s father was a firearms collector and enthusiast who taught each of his young sons to shoot, clean, and maintain weapons. He took them on hunting trips, and Charles became an avid hunter and skilled marksman. His father said, “Charlie could plug the eye out of a squirrel by the time he was sixteen.” Whitman joined the Boy Scouts at age 11 and became an Eagle Scout at 12 years and three months, reportedly the youngest Eagle Scout up to that time.

High school

He also became an accomplished pianist at age 12 and around the same time started a large newspaper route. In September 1955, Whitman entered St. Ann’s High School in West Palm Beach, where he was seen as a moderately popular student. By the next month, he had saved enough from his newspaper route to buy a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, which he used for the route. Without telling his father first, Whitman enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps one month after graduating high school in June 1959, where he had finished seventh in a class of 72 students.

He told a family friend that the reason for enlisting was an incident a month earlier: his father had beaten him and thrown him into the family swimming pool because Whitman came home drunk. Whitman left home on July 6, assigned to an 18-month tour at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. As he traveled to Parris Island, his father—still unaware of the enlistment—learned of it and called a federal agency trying to get his son’s enlistment canceled. U.S.
