Twilight (novel series)
A four-novel series about a girl and a vampire.
Last updated
Bella Swan, a teenager who relocates to Forks, Washington, becomes romantically involved with the vampire Edward Cullen across four main books that came out one per year from 2005 to 2008.[1] By August 2020, translations into 49 languages had been made, and worldwide sales of the series had surpassed 160 million copies.[2]
Making and release
Meyer announced that the novella would be available as a free ebook from her website as a thank-you to fans.[3] A dream Stephenie Meyer had on June 2, 2003, gave her the initial concept for Twilight, according to the author.[4] From that dream, Meyer wrote the material that became chapter 13 of the finished book, and she completed the entire novel in three months.[4] Megan Tingley, the Little, Brown editor who signed Meyer, stated that she knew she had a future bestseller when she was only halfway through reading the Twilight manuscript.[4]
Summit Entertainment turned the novels into a film series; the first three movies came out in 2008, 2009, and 2010.[5]
What the cited sources add
The Australia Times reported that translation rights for the Twilight Saga had been sold in nearly 50 countries and 100 million copies had been sold worldwide.[3] A BYU Studies article noted that in 2008, Little, Brown sold 27.5 million copies of Meyer's four vampire novels.[6] The same article stated that the Twilight movie grossed $191 million in domestic box office sales.[6] The BYU Studies analysis identified the Mormon theological principle of "overcoming the natural man" as a key theme in the series.[6]
The article also described how Edward's self-control allows him to subdue his monstrous nature and avoid preying on humans.[6] The same interview noted that Publishers Weekly named Twilight one of the best books of the year.[7]
