Maine Nordiques (NA3HL)
Junior A hockey team from Lewiston, Maine.
Last updated
The Maine Nordiques were a Tier III Junior "A" ice hockey team based in Lewiston, Maine. The team competed in the North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL) and played its home games at The Colisée. The franchise originated in 2012 and underwent several relocations and rebrandings before becoming the Nordiques.
History
The team was founded in 2012 as the Lake George Fighting Spirit in Lake George, New York, and became one of the seven inaugural members of the Northern States Hockey League (NSHL). In its first season, the Fighting Spirit won the NSHL regular season championship with a 37–4–1 record, earning an automatic bid to the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) United Hockey Union tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada, alongside the Syracuse Stampede. Prior to the 2013–14 season, the team relocated to Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, and was renamed the AHI Fighting Spirit after a partnership with the American Hockey Institute.
The team captured its second straight NSHL regular season title with a 31–4–3–2 record, then moved to Laconia, New Hampshire, for the 2014–15 season and became the New Hampshire Fighting Spirit. During that season, the NSHL rebranded as the North American 3 Eastern Hockey League (NA3EHL) under the Tier II North American Hockey League, and the organization left the AAU to seek USA Hockey sanctioning, which was granted before the 2015–16 season. Prior to the 2015–16 season, the team relocated again to Lewiston, Maine, as the L/A Fighting Spirit, playing at the Androscoggin Bank Colisée.
The team joined the NA3HL when it absorbed the NA3EHL before the 2016–17 season. In March 2017, owner and head coach Rod Simmons sold the team to Jim Cain, owner of the Androscoggin Bank Colisée, who rebranded it as the Lewiston/Auburn Nordiques for the 2017–18 season. Assistant coach Cam Robichaud was promoted to head coach.
