The Idaten Deities Know Only Peace

The manga *The Idaten Deities Know Only Peace* (originally *Heion Sedai no Idaten-tachi* in Japanese) was created by writer Amahara and illustrator Coolkyousinnjya. It ran in Hakusensha’s seinen magazine *Young Animal* from August 2018 to August 2024, collecting nine volumes. This version is a remake of Amahara’s own webcomic, which he began in 2008 and abandoned in 2016. An 11-episode anime adaptation by studio MAPPA aired on Fuji TV’s Noitamina block from July to October 2021.

The story begins 800 years ago, when demons nearly wiped out humanity. Desperate prayers from humans gave rise to a race of gods called the Idaten, who defeated the demons and restored peace. In the present, a new generation of Idaten has grown up in safety, knowing little about the ancient enemy. They train under Rin, the sole surviving original Idaten from that war, struggling to find purpose in a world that no longer needs them. When the Zoble Empire resurrects a demon, these misfit warriors are forced back into battle.

Key Idaten include Hayato, a youth created by Rin 80 years ago who is obsessed with self-improvement and dismisses his duty to fight demons, calling Rin “old hag” but respecting her strength. Ysley, a scholarly deity who appeared naturally 100 years ago, prefers research over combat and runs a research facility in the nation of Hotaina, generating surgical scalpels from his right hand. Paula, the youngest, is cheerful and gentle, skilled in silent movement, and eventually joins Ysley in Rin’s training. Rin herself is a formidable mentor in Chinese-style clothing, having witnessed the ancient war and dedicated centuries to training, using hand-to-hand combat or a greatsword. Prontea is a deity who aids Rin against the Zoble Empire, while Gill, created from human consciousness within the empire, is unusually tech-savvy but deemed ineffective due to her rigid commitment to goodness.

The demon side features Demon King Over-M, also known as Dr. Obami, who leads Zoble’s forces and revives demons using frozen remains to create humanoid “C-Soldiers.”
