Given the Movie (2020 film)

Given the Movie (Japanese: 映画 ギヴン, Hepburn: Eiga Givun; stylized in all lowercase) is a 2020 Japanese animated romantic drama film. Directed by Hikaru Yamaguchi and written by Yuniko Ayana, it is based on the manga of the same name by Natsuki Kizu. Produced by Lerche and distributed by Aniplex, the film adapts the second story arc of the manga and takes place after the events of the anime series, centering on the relationship between Haruki and Akihiko. The voice cast includes Shōgo Yano, Yuma Uchida, Masatomo Nakazawa, Takuya Eguchi, and Shintarō Asanuma. Originally scheduled for release in Japan on May 16, 2020, it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and released on August 22, 2020.

The story follows the band Given as its members deal with complex emotions and shifting relationships. Bassist Haruki Nakayama struggles with his feelings for drummer Akihiko Kaji, who remains tied to a difficult past relationship. As the band prepares for a major live performance, tensions rise, and music becomes a key outlet for expressing unspoken feelings. The characters confront personal struggles and find clarity and hope in their connections and shared passion for music.

In September 2019, a sequel anime film adapting the second story arc of the manga was announced. Key staff and cast members reprised their roles. Fuji TV's boys' love (yaoi) anime label, Blue Lynx, handled development. Director Hikaru Yamaguchi and the key staff expressed gratitude for the film.

The film opened at number 9 in the Japanese box office in its opening weekend and dropped off the charts in its second weekend. Crunchyroll acquired international distribution rights and streamed it on its website on February 2, 2021. In Southeast Asia, WeTV released the film on May 25, 2021.
