Foo Fighters
American rock band formed by Dave Grohl in 1994.
The Foo Fighters got their start in Seattle in 1994, when Dave Grohl—formerly the drummer for Nirvana—decided to make solo recordings after his band fell apart. He played nearly everything himself on the debut album, *Foo Fighters* (1995), finishing it in six days. The name came from a World War II term for UFOs, and Grohl initially wanted to stay anonymous, but the demo tapes drew label interest. To perform live, he put together a band: bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith (both from Sunny Day Real Estate), plus guitarist Pat Smear, who had toured with Nirvana. Their first show was in February 1995, five months before the album dropped.
The lineup shifted quickly. Goldsmith left during the making of the second album, *The Colour and the Shape* (1997), and Grohl re-recorded most of the drum parts. Smear also departed soon after. Taylor Hawkins replaced Goldsmith on drums, and Franz Stahl—who had been in Scream with Grohl before Nirvana—took over guitar. Stahl was fired before the third album, *There Is Nothing Left to Lose* (1999), leaving the band a trio until Chris Shiflett joined after that record was done. The group released *One by One* in 2002, then the two-disc *In Your Honor* (2005), split between acoustic and heavy songs. *Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace* came out in 2007.
For *Wasting Light* (2011), produced by Butch Vig, Smear returned as a full member after playing with the band regularly since 2005. *Sonic Highways* (2014) served as the soundtrack to a TV miniseries Grohl directed. *Concrete and Gold* (2017) became their second U.S. number-one album and was the first to include keyboardist Rami Jaffee as an official member, though he had been a session and touring player for years. *Medicine at Midnight* (2021) was the last album before Hawkins died in March 2022. Josh Freese filled in on drums from 2023 to 2025, then Ilan Rubin took over. The band released *But Here We Are* in June 2023 and *Your Favorite Toy* in April 2026.
The Foo Fighters have won 15 Grammys, including five for Best Rock Album, placing them among the most decorated rock acts in the awards’ history. In 2021, they received the first “Global Icon” prize at the MTV Video Music Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility.
