Gameplay

Gunvolt controls similarly to the original game, using a gun to lock onto enemies and an electric field to attack them. Players can also control Copen, who uses a dash attack to slam into enemies and lock on, then shoot with targeted attacks. Copen can also use powers from defeated bosses, reminiscent of the Mega Man series.

Plot

After the Sumeragi Group's failed Project Muse and the death of their leader Nova, the organization is in a power vacuum. Gunvolt, now a solo agent, and his girlfriend Joule—who exists only as her septimal projection Lumen after being physically killed—infiltrate the Sumeragi airship Seraph. They learn from Xiao that the Seraph is on a crash course with a skyscraper; Gunvolt uses his magnetic septima to pull the ship away, with Joule amplifying her abilities. Meanwhile, Copen, a human scientist who hates adepts, arrives to investigate and search for his hospitalized sister Mytyl. Gunvolt rescues Mytyl and delivers her to Copen, but they are ambushed by Zonda, an adept Copen thought dead. Zonda reveals the Seven, a cult called Eden, and shows her true form as a pink-haired girl. She captures Joule in a mirror and shatters it, taking the shards to amplify the Seven's powers in new containers called Grimoires. Copen snatches a shard and gives chase; Gunvolt finds one remaining piece of Joule, now a weakened childlike form.

Development

The game was teased in February 2015 with a logo tweet from Inti Creates. Footage appeared in a Nintendo Direct on March 3, 2016, and an official trailer that day gave a vague release window of Summer 2016. The Japanese release date for both the game and the Striker Pack was set as August 25. Inti Creates partnered with Yacht Club Games for the North American physical release on October 4. A Twitch stream on August 20 revealed a European digital release on September 30, but the physical version's date remained unknown. The Shovel Knight amiibo unlocks a special boss battle. Japan released a DLC pack in December 2016 containing score attacks, a song track, and a speed run mode.
